How SSL certificates work
SSL certificates consist of specially encoded text. It is generated for a host name (for example, "www.yourdomain.com") and then configured on the server hosting the website. Once set up information can be securely passed back and forward between a website and visitor via a https:// connection. Lock icons normally appear in browsers when secure connections are made to websites.
An SSL certificate is required if a website has an online shop or receives/sends private information. SSL certificates should really be sought in such cases to prevent anyone intercepting sensitive information being passed.
